A history of Jews in Timişoara, the main city of Romanian Banat. The late 1930s were marked with a rise in Romanian, German, and Hungarian nationalism in Banat, and hence with a rise in antisemitism. Ch. 8 (pp. 377-441), "The Jews of Timişoara during the Fascist Dictatorship and the War", deals with the precarious situation of the city's Jews in 1940-44, when Romania was an ally of Nazi Germany. Dwells on the anti-Jewish legislation and persecution of Jews in Timişoara; the deportation of several dozen Jews from Timişoara, probably to Transnistria in September 1942; and the impending danger to the city's Jewish community in September 1944, when the Germans made an attempt to reconquer Romania (which had switched sides in the war in August that year).
